Fastest way to earn General EXP & level up

10/18/2023 – Added EXP when attacking historic city and the number of attacks on NPC sub-city required to bring the general level to 45.
1/12/2023 – Added the number of attacks required per level when leveling up by attacking NPC subordinate city.

You can earn General EXP by hunting monsters, but this method is too inefficient. You should only hunt monsters for the purpose of earning item drops and prestige, and earn General EXP through other methods.

The following is an example of the General EXP you can get from boss monsters
(*without the EXP boost from research, rings, etc.)

  • Lv4 Skeleton Dragon 1,200EXP
  • Lv8 Peryton 2,600EXP
  • Lv12 Kamaitachi 4,500EXP

To defeat Kamaitachi, you need more than 30 keep level 30 and more than 450,000 tier 12 cavalry, but you’ll get 4,500 EXP after you get that far. But with the following methods, even if you’re below Keep Level 20, you can easily earn 10 times more than that.

There are two main methods.

A).PvP (Player vs Player)

For example, if the enemy is at about keep level 23, it is possible to earn nearly 2M EXP in just one battle.

There are many different types of PvP, such as attacking, defending, attacking player cities, attacking temples, etc., but the most efficient ones are listed below.

Attack the enemy player city with a Sub-Mayor

If you attack with a subordinate city, the mayor of the subordinate city will also get General EXP (half of the EXP that goes into the main general). Therefore, you should set the generals you want to level up for your mayors.

However, you can not take a subordinate city with you in the following cases. Therefore, it is mainly a solo attack on the player city.

  • Rally
  • Attack on the Temple
  • Attack on Buildings in the Battlefield
  • Attacks on NPC Subordinate Cities

You get EXP in proportion to ‘Power You Reduce’ and ‘Tier Level of enemy army’

The EXP you receive is roughly as follows

  • Main General EXP – about 1/4 to 1/2 of the reduced power
  • Sub-Mayor EXP – about 1/8 to 1/4 of the reduced power

Therefore, if you attack, you won’t get EXP if the enemy’s troop count was zero to begin with.

Example 1

  • Enemy keep level 21, power 7.4M, monarch level 22
  • Reduced Power 659.2K
  • Number of troops defeated 90,314 (tiers 1-6)
  • Main General 194,437 EXP
  • Sub-Mayor 97,218 EXP

Example 2

  • Enemy keep level 23, power 9.7M, monarch level 20
  • Reduced power 5M
  • Number of troops defeated 369,489 (tiers 1-8)
  • Main General 1,908,102 EXP
  • Sub-Mayor 954,051 EXP

B). Attacking NPC Subordinate Cities Multiple times

*NPC – Non Player Character

If you attack an NPC subordinate city while your subordinate city slot is full, you can attack it repeatedly because it cannot be occupied.

If you take advantage of this, for example, by attacking a green NPC subordinate city multiple times, you can earn 50,000 EXP in less than 10 seconds, or about 1M EXP in less than 5 minutes.

In case of the blue NPC subordinate city, you can earn nearly 3M EXP in less than 5 minutes.

Note: As mentioned above, you cannot take your own subordinate cities (mayors) with you when attacking “NPC” subordinate city. Only the main general can earn EXP this way.

Procedure

If you already have a subordinate city, it’s quicker to let it go once. (Though you need to be careful not to get sidetracked.)

  1. Teleport next to your subordinate city that is the target of the attack.
  2. Abandon that subordinate city.
  3. Occupy the nearest white NPC city to fill its empty slot.
  4. Attack until you feel like it.

EXP you can get per attack

As follows.

White (Common) NPC Subordinate City (Power 21.6K)
5,456 EXP

Green (Uncommon) NPC Subordinate City (Power 175.4K)
48,765 EXP

Blue (Excellent) NPC Subordinate City (Power 478.6K)
143,390 EXP

Purple (Legendary) NPC Subordinate City (Power 1.4M)
462,763 EXP

Gold (Epic) NPC Subordinate City (Power 9.1M)
3,129,406 EXP

Historic/Famous City (Power 19.8M)
6,380,100 EXP

*Power and EXP vary slightly between cultures.

Number of attacks required to level up

How to Reduce Deaths to Zero

Only use siege machine

Attacking NPC subordinate cities will result in deaths rather than wounds, but the best way to reduce the death toll to zero is to attack with siege machines only.

In fact, I tested “Mounted only”, “Ranged only”, “Ranged + Siege”, and “Siege only”, and of these, only “Siege only” resulted in zero deaths.

Layering

Also, it is better to include siege machines of each tier instead of only siege machines of the highest tier.
(If the siege attack is high, a minimum of two tiers is sufficient; it is not necessary to include all tiers.)

Reference: Test Results with Different Troop Composition Only
(*Attack a Purple (Legendary) NPC Subordinate City)

  • t11 siege machine only 140,000 units -> 3,980 deaths
  • t1 ~ t11 siege machines 10,000 units each (110,000 units total) -> 0 deaths

If there are still deaths, it is because the tier or number of siege is insufficient, or the buffs are weak due to insufficient general growth and research, etc.

Supplemental: Why you should mix the lower tiers ( Battle Mechanics )

This is probably because mixing in the lower tiers allows us to attack more times per turn. ( In addition, this formation tactic is called “layering.”)

– Combat in Evony is turn-based.
– NPC subordinate cities’ troop formation consists of multiple troop types and troop tiers.
– Our attacks are made per single troop type and single tier.
– The target of each attack is also of a single type and tier.

Therefore, if you have only a single type of troops and a single tier, you get the following.

– In your turn, you can only attack a single type and tier of troops, so you cannot annihilate them in a single turn.
– After you attack, the enemy can attack multiple times.

Hence, in this case, deaths are likely to occur.

I’m at K32, 300% siege machines buff, purple sub-city was 30K for T10 and 10K for T9-1 for a total of 120K with no injuries.
I am thinking of leveling up in gold sub-city, please let me know if you know how much T10,T11,T12,T13 etc. would be needed if I build T9-1 layers of 10K each.
Thank you in advance.

As an update piece for this, Historic/Famous cities offer
famous (19.8m power, 397,984 troops)
6,380,100 xp per hit
1-30 = 18 attacks
1-35 = 61 attacks
1-40 = 180 attacks

Please describe the required siege machine layers and buffs, as they are important.

I was attacking a gold sub with my siege machine and lost them all. I contacted the game people and they told me ad I quote;
“Hi Liege,
After checking, we noticed that you lost a lot of sieges when attacking sub cities.
Please note that the soldiers lost in attacking the sub-city will die directly and cannot be recovered.”
This goes against what is posted here!

Tnguy88

I’m getting deaths now with t12 siege machine 300k + t11 siege machine 120k on a Gold Sub. not sure if anyone else is getting deaths also.

fais des recherches sur des machines de siège.

I level on gold with 100k of T12, T11, T10 and 30k T9 with 0 wounded.

KrustyKrab 5

Place a lead general (lv 20 or higher) for siege attack, and an assistant general for leveling, and you should see -0- deaths on your pvp reports.

I try to train my general with a blue sub. I used 60k siege each t6-t10 but I still get some death. theoretically it should be enough. Any one has suggestion on it ? Thanks very much.

Anonymous

I upgraded my workshop and built some t11 siege. I use 12k for each t6-t11 this time and got 0 death. so, T11 is critical for training at blue subs! I believe it is due to t11 has higher range than t10.

As of now (Feb 1, 2023) I don’t seem to be gaining any experience by attacking a subordinate city while all my slots are full.

Am I missing something obvious?

Anonymous

I am doing this today (Feb 8, 2023). Only the general that you send gets experience and it is applied automatically, without having to manual claim your experience.

KrustyKrab

You cannot level generals beyond the level of your Monarch???

With the recent addition of assistant generals, you can level up several generals much faster as follows with sub cities:

1. Set siege monarch gear
2. Set multiple siege march presets (with whatever layer #s work best for your power)…For gold sub, I use 150k t13, 125k t12, 100k t11 for each preset.
3. Set main general of each preset w/ different L20+ general and 3 stars, so you can add lower level assistant to each. Both get the same EXP
4. Make sure all your sub slots are full (# is based on your VIP level)
5. Port as close as you can to empty sub city
6. Attack empty sub city with first siege preset
7. Attack again with 2nd siege preset
8. Repeat above as fast as you can attack for 3rd, etc presets if you have them
9. When first march returns, repeat attack cycles with first preset, 2nd, etc.

I personally use 4 presets. In this manner, I’m leveling up 8 generals vs just 1 in the same time period. Good luck

Enforcer

This worked great for me! Thank you!! So much faster leveling up now. I was doing one at a time before…

Evonygamer83

Hello All,

I had zeroed a Gold Sub City with Seige Machines Layering.

For first I was told to create a layer of T13, T12, T11 and T10 seige machines, T13 with 150k and others each with 100k.

My keep level is K32.

As i started creating T12 seige machines, i noticed the RSS amount it was taking. So i made a calculation on rss for creating T12 – 2000k on seige machines. Same way i calculate on T11 too.

Second think, I trained 350k T11 seige machines (cheaper than creating 150k T12).

I applied Monarch Gear on Seige Machines attack, defence and hp.
I layered T11-350k, T10-160k and T9-70k.
I zeroed the Gold Sub with my 1st general who was above 1.1m power. But i lost on 435 seige machines when i used a general below 1.1m power.

I trained 100k more T11 and 30k more T9 seige machines.

I layered like T11-450k, T10-160k and T9-100k.

And now i can zero a gold sub even without a general.

Easy way, less rss

I have not been able to attack an uncommon subordinate city since around SVS two weeks ago. Even if I create a vacancy. Is anyone else experiencing the same problem? Although it is possible to attack common cities…

It seems that the level of the lower cities has increased, but what do you think?

Even 0 wounds configurations before now result in significant wounds.

If any Case our alliance building demolished after that can our alliance participate in boc and bog .
means without building can we play boc and bog .

With assistant generals you can level gens twice as fast, confirmed for myself that one a purple sub both get 450k XP per hit!

I have a question, does the general get experience in PVP on the battlefield?

Wanted to share that attacking an NPC Rostock gives around 9 million exp, enemy troop power is 21.6M with 429,576 troops.

Iftekhar

We did this with a Historic Sub City.
It gives around 9.52M EXP per hit.

Here are some No death troops combination which some of our alliance members and I observed.
1) 450k T13 Siege, 150k t10-12 Siege
2) 250k T13 Siege, 200k T12 Siege, 300k T11 Siege
3) 100K T14-T12

Please add this information to the wiki page if possible.

Without t13 we are still able to lvl up generalels!

I use my big from alliance. Just send reinforcment and wait someone to hit him 😂

DarkHearTeDD

What strategy preferred to attack golden subs? How many layers and troops?

Dilligaf

Blue sub takes 25k of each T9 to T11 siege for a total of 75k.
Purple sub takes 50k of each T9 to T11 siege for a total of 150k.
Both with no wounded and doesnt matter if lvl 1 gen without gear.

Depends on your research. I use 20k T1-T9 & 30k T10 & T11

But if general have 5 Star then we get wounded so what is right number of troops for no wounded

Iftekhar

We did this with a Historic Sub City.
It gives around 9,527,145 EXP per hit.

Here are some No death troops combination which some of our alliance members and I observed.
1) 450k T13 Siege, 150k t10-12 Siege
2) 250k T13 Siege, 200k T12 Siege, 300k T11 Siege
3) 100K T14-T12

I’m not sure when they removed it, but it looks like there is no longer a way to include subordinate city generals in an attack against an NPC sub city. This means you will need to level up generals using PvP, preferably BoC/BoG, since all dead troops will be healed, and no generals will be killed or captured.

As stated in the body of the article, for a long time now, you cannot take your own subordinate cities with you when attacking NPC subordinate city.

Hi! Thank you for that great job!
I’m trying to level up my general using this method. But in the reports I haven’t (keep lvl 15) general experience earned after attacking a white sub, same for green. Maybe an update change that game mechanic?

It doesn’t say you got experience, but you do get for every troop killed

Thank you! I’ll try it and have a better look at the reports =)

10K of each in purple was painful… 100K t11 and 10K of each below fixed the issue.
Are you sure the blue/purple info is correct?
Gold worked, but a note that this combo is not suitable to level up non-fight gens or gens from lvl 1.

LUCKY LUCIANO

So if we are doing a raid on gold sub will the entire participants general get 3 millions general exp or only the person who is initiating the raid

I personally think there’s an error in the data of attacking blue sub city with 0 casualties..

I’ve tried on at least 5-6 occasions each cost me a considerably large amount of loss of seige machines..ranging from 4k+ to a milder 100s or so loss…
Initially I pair a weak general with little to no enhancement and war equipments just to see how much damage I would get using each tier 10k seiges..and the results is just devastating..I get the forementioned 4k+ seige loss..
Then I tried on the next several tries..a level 21 general with 3* enhancement, fully geared to the max with general’s equipment with raw hp 500k++ ,and 10k of each seiges.. I still get 1k+ loss..last but not least I tried the same general this time 15k each tier seiges.. I still get 100s+ loss…
So is the data valid or has the battle dynamic been changed recently?
Please do refresh it if it’s so..
Correct me if I’m mistaken… Thank you for your input.🤠🙏

I don’t know how much your buffs are, so I can’t say for sure, but I think it’s simply that the attack buffs on siege machines are still weak. Please raise your general level more and improve your research and monarch gear etc. See below for more information on what constitutes a buff.
Buff / Debuff – Basic Guide

catcity meow

To get zero dead troops, first, it depends on the tier of your siege machines and then the number of troops, there are many possible combinations of layers (you need at least 2 layers). Assuming no buff at all, to attack a blue sub with zero dead you would need t10 or t9 troops as a minimum, for example, using two-layer you would need 24.5k of t12 and 7k of t11; or 38.5k of t10 and 12k of t9; another option is using six layers would be 8.5k t12, 2.5k t11, 8k t10, 3.5 t9, 6k t8 and 3k t7. There are many combinations, but those are some examples.

I used to level with 10k of t1-t10 and about 70k t11 on a purple sub with no killed…but in the last couple of weeks, with similar setup and even more t11s, about 100k, I still get killed…it’s possible dynamics have changed

Does any one get glitch and general and siege got wiped off? I only used three tier 25000 each(8-10) for blue sub. Purple sub needed t11 regardless t10 siege number( well let’s say 35k got wounded).
Anyway in the middle of training, all of sudden they all got killed after 100 times of zero death.

Question. Is sending reinforcements in an undead event a good way to gain exp? For example, I’ll reinforce a level 35 castle with a general and one soldier that I want to level up.

What is the minimum number of troops required to attack a green sub ? i have catapults lvl 9, It’s enough?

cananeco

A Lv9 siege machine can be your mainstay, but it will not be enough. I’m raising Wei Qing, but I haven’t enhanced him yet, nor have I given him any stars. But now, at Lv17, the general is leading the following troops to attack the green subordinate city unharmed. :
Lv9 siege> 15000, Lv8> 10000, Lv7> 5000, Lv6> 5000, Lv5> 5000, Lv4> 5000 (45000 in total)

When I started to use this method LVL 8 was my max siege. I used 15,000 of t1-t8 (since I did not have the higher layers) on white and green sub cities with 0 losses using brand new level 1 generals naked with no experience or skill books. I easily leveled up a dozen brand new generals from 0-teen levels in a short period of time. The exp per level starts to climb steeply after that so I switched to the next new general after about lvl 13-15. I have not found any blue cities unoccupied to test this method on yet.

Anonymous

How many Siege Machines are necessary to defeat an uncommon subordinate city?

Zach Giraffe

I use 33k Tier 9 and 15k Tier 8. Fewer will likely work, too. I concur that you MUST be layered. 100k Tier 9 will still get deaths. Layer, layer. Also, it is a pain, but you need to confirm your general is there, and glance at the troop quantity to ve sure it is correct, before EVERY attack. The game will glitch, and if you are not paying attention, it might only send your lowest tier. Sending 13k Tier 8 siege only resulted in all siege killed and (it happened to me!) a dead general! At least the general can be revived.

Big Greg

Add the best five star axe you cam craft on your general as well. In some cases it helps to eliminate dead as well with less or lower tier siege machines.

Has the zero deaths battle mechanic changed recently? I keep loosing all my siege machines even when I outpower the enemy city, have more than 1 tier and a near 50% buff on attack and defence

How you build range of siege machines? If your workshop L11 then can build only 4 different types of machines.

When you reacquire a subordinate city, the remaining time for facilities and troops in training will be reset, but the number of facilities and troops already upgraded and trained will be carried over.

> Hello.
> I find it a very smart tactic to drop a sub and conquer again. I have a question. What happens to the soldiers and power of the city when you conquer it again? Are they lost? I know the level of the city is the same. But I think the armies are not. So is it worth it?

On the “How to Reduce Deaths to Zero” section, the 10,000 of tier 1-11 of siege machines getting no deaths, what sub city ranks does this apply to (white only or green, blue, purple and yellow also?) as it’s not clear to which it applies to?

That was the result in purple (Legendary). 😃 (Added to the article)
In addition, that is not enough strength to attack the gold (Epic). There will be many deaths.

I am a newbie to this game, having been playing for about 6 months.
I found this site and I’m excited to read it.
When you say “Attack the enemy player city with a Sub-Mayor”, do you mean to turn on “Automatic fight for other Cities” in the settings?
Also, when attacking subordinate cities to gain EXP, can’t I just attack other cities without giving up my own subordinate cities?

As for earning EXP, that’s fine. I just meant that if you want to save yourself the hassle of finding subordinate cities, it’s quicker to release your own subordinate cities. 😃
As for attacking with subordinate city mayors, see the “Settings” section of the following article.

If I use only the same level of siege machine, there will be deaths, but if I mix multiple levels of siege machine only, there will be zero deaths. What is the reason for this? There is a mysterious parameter.

What about purple and gold subs at k33? Is it possible for 0 deaths with siege only?

Beware you are unbubbled when you do this. I was doing this and got hit. And this is during supposed peace time.

Unfortunately, with the update, it is no longer possible to attack a subordinate city with a mayor.😭

When attacking NPC subordinate city, you cannot take your own subordinate cities with you, as before.
Only generals in the main city can earn EXP for attacking NPC subordinate city.

I always find it very helpful. Thank you!
I would like to ask another rudimentary question about the efficient way of earning general exp, which is to liberate my subordinate cities and then attack them.
If I occupy a subordinate city again after earning exp, will the level of the subordinate city be set to 1?

Thank you for a great site. I can always rely on it. I’m not sure if I should write a question in the comments section, but if you’d like to let me know.

Attacking a subordinate city will result in quite a few battle deaths. I’ve tried changing the composition of my soldiers to include weak soldiers, etc., but I can’t find the right combination.

If you have any advice, I’d appreciate it if you could tell me.

Thank you as well 🙂

In this game, if you don’t have enough base strength, adding more troops will only result in more injuries “only”.
Base strength is not power. There are many factors, but the big one is generals. (See here for more information.)

If you’re throwing all type of troops into that battle, try reducing them as much as you can. I think it’s better to specialize in one of the troop types instead of reducing all troop types equally.Cavalry and Ground are more likely to die, so if you have a lot of Ranged, Ranged-Specific is a good idea. (Plus buffs such as monarch gear should be Ranged-Specific as well.)

Probably the only thing that might suddenly and dramatically reduce the number of deaths in that situation would be the above, or lowering the ranks of the subordinate cities you attack (if they’re green, make them white). 🙂

I have heard of people doing the general xp trick with sub cities using only siege to attack? Do you know anything about this?

Thanks for the information.😃 After writing this article, I tested it with various troop formations and found that the best results came from troop formations with only siege machines. (I added it to the article.)

I’ve been playing this game for about a month now. When I first started, I couldn’t find any useful strategy sites, so I was hitting the ground running.
So I remember how impressed I was when I found this site.
This, how to level up the generals is great information too! I’ll be using it right away!
